The Tuba Mirabilis is an organ stop frequently found on theater organs, somewhat more rarely found on classical (specifically, Romantic) instruments. I have come across it most often on Aeolian-Skinner organs. It was, if memory serves correctly, an invention of Robert Hope-Jones, the father of 20th-century British organ building.

It's... a boat horn. Basically. Nicely voiced, but... nonetheless, a boat horn.

But like so many of us, it's misunderstood and under appreciated. So, someone has to be willing to stand up for this poor little stop and say... Yes! Bring it on!

When you want a solo reed that's big, fat, regal, and smooth. It's not really a "blending" stop. I use it when I want to add size and nobility. I can't get enough of 'em--but then again, I always go for the bombastic whenever possible.

I think I heard one of these in Elgar's Imperial March... you know the one I gave you a link to. I love to hear large, powerful pipe organs.

Yeah, they're by heritage British, and they go well with the big fat English Romantic sound.

Any organ big enough to support one is just fine by me! I love the noise of an organ big enough to get both your innards and the floor shaking.

True. Yet I also like it when those same organs feature soft, sweet strings as well.

Just got off the phone with Slowdog. He is doing OK. speaks highly of you. He says you are an old hippy like him. LOL He is the one responsible for most of my organ knowledge and stop terminology.
